THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Qinwen Zheng brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th into the Australian Open after enjoying an incredible second-half to last season. The Chinese rising star enjoyed a serious upturn in form on the late hardcourt swing, taking Iga Swiatek to three sets before defeat at the Cincinnati Masters before a huge run to the quarter-finals of the US Open saw her stun former finalist Ons Jabeur in straight sets. Zheng then won Gold at the Asian Games to further cement her status as China’s leading global athlete and she picked up two WTA titles in Palermo and Zhangzhou before finishing runner-up at the WTA Elite Trophy.

World number 78 Ashlyn Kruger is no pushover, though, after claiming her maiden WTA title at the Osaka Open late last season. The 19-year-old brings a three-match losing streak into her Melbourne debut to likely fall to one of the shortest straws in the draw here but the American is tenacious enough to warrant early caution. Back Zheng to win outright.

TIP: QINWEN ZHENG TO WIN
