World number 67 Peyton Stearns came perilously close to stunning world number two Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set thriller at Indian Wells two weeks ago and she should be able to double down here with a strong run. The 22-year-old reached the round of 16 at the US Open last summer to build on her excellent promise from her college career but it had been a pretty slow start to 2024 until recent bursts in California and Dubai. World number 64 Yafan Wang began the year in serious form, stunning both Sorana Cirstea and Emma Raducanu en-route to the third round at the Australian Open before deep runs in Hua Hin and Austin. A two-match losing streak since defeat to eventual champion Yue Yuan in Austin suggests her head might have gone down after recent disappointments but expect this to be a gutsy, scrappy and likely lengthy first encounter between two serious athletes.
