THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Daria Kasatkina finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Adelaide International this week but she rode her luck a lot to reach that stage, with back-to-back walkovers from the round of 16 through to the final. The 26-year-old had to come back from a set down to beat Anna Kalinskaya in her previous match but she looked in reasonable shape the week before, beating Magda Linette and Marta Kostyuk in straight sets before an expected defeat to world number two Aryna Sabalenka. This is a really tough draw for the Russian, though, against rising star Peyton Stearns. The 22-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakthrough on tour last year to reach the third round at Roland-Garros on her debut before making the round of 16 at the US Open in only her fourth Grand Slam appearance.
Stearns takes a 0-2 record into her Melbourne debut but both of her defeats have come in three sets so far this year and Kasatkina may be stressed after suffering a first round upset this time last season. Back Kasatkina to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors or consider a one off on Stearns to cause another upset.
