This should be a thoroughly entertaining first encounter between world number 29 Sebastian Baez, who received a bye to the round of 16 as the fourth seed in Sofia, and Pavel Kotov at a career-high ATP world ranking of 80th. 24-year-old Kotov took the first set from Gael Monfils before defeat in a thrilling Stockholm Open final, his first at tour level, late last month but he needed a comeback of his own to avoid an early upset here in victory over Alexandar Lazarov. 22-year-old Baez won back-to-back ATP titles at Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem in August, across surfaces, to prove himself a serious talent on tour but he has quite understandably struggled to maintain that level since Daniil Medvedev ended his winning streak at 12 in the third round of the US Open. Baez is the more dependable performer at this level but Kotov should not be underestimated. Back Baez to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
