THE LOWDOWN
World number six Ons Jabeur cut a frustrated figure in the latter stages of last season after once again losing the Wimbledon final as the favourite, both in form and with the crowd. The 29-year-old was incredible in the quarter-finals and semi-finals at SW19 last summer, avenging her defeat in the final the season before with a comeback victory over Elena Rybakina before a similarly remarkable effort against Aryna Sabalenka, but she suffered the occasion of the final in defeat to Marketa Vondrousova. Jabeur also finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 US Open final, suggesting she may never quite make that last leap into tennis immortality, but she remains one of the most popular, charismatic and entertaining players on tour backed by neutrals everywhere unless she is playing a native.
THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Yulia Starodubtsewa will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 150th after qualifying for her Grand Slam debut here on Monday but she has not been rewarded kindly by the draw gods. Jabeur has not played competitively since the WTA Finals in November but that is probably a good thing as she aims to start refreshed and recharged. Back the Tunisian to win in straight sets.
TIP: ONS JABEUR TO WIN 2-0
