THE LOWDOWN

World number two Ons Jabeur suffered a gut-wrenching defeat on her long-awaited WTA Finals debut, losing from a set up to Aryna Sabalenka. The 28-year-old made history by becoming the fist African to qualify for the year-end WTA Finals this season in a year that saw her finish runner-up at two Grand Slams and claim her first Masters title at the Madrid Open.

World number three Jessica Pegula struggled with the pressure on her WTA Finals debut in both singles and doubles, first losing to Maria Sakkari in straight sets before falling in three to Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan in the doubles alongside Coco Gauff. The America, also 28, saw her five-match winning streak snapped from claiming her first Masters title at the Guadalajara Open last time out where she beat Sakkari comfortably in the final.

THE PREDICTION

Two of the clear outside favourites for the WTA Finals this week, and not just because of their rankings, surprisingly lost their openers at Fort Worth and this already looks an absolute must-win for either player to have a solid chance at making the semi-finals. Pegula has enjoyed the netter recent form but Jabeur leads their head-to-head 3-2 having claimed each of their last three meetings, including twice this season at the Dubai Tennis Championships and to win the Madrid final. Three of their five matches have seen three sets and that option looks a suitable way to avoid picking a winner here with everything on the line and the conditions likely to favour both players in places. The home crowd should pull largely for Pegula but Jabeur is a popular player wherever she goes. Jabeur has won at least a set in each of their last four encounters, so that looks the most sensible way to lean if forced to side with one given player.
