THE PREDICTION

World number nine Hubert Hurkacz just missed out on qualification for the ATP Finals late last season after finally bursting into form on the late hardcourt swing, winning his second Masters title in Shanghai before finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Basel. The 26-year-old did end up playing a match in Turin, in injured Stefanos Tsitsipas’ stead, and he impressed in a tight three-set defeat to Novak Djokovic for a second, very close battle with the Serb in 2023. Hurkacz is coming in on a heavy disappointment after his capitulation in the United Cup Final, first in singles against Alexander Zverev from a set and a break up and then in doubles alongside Iga Swiatek, but he should be able to overcome that during this kind opener. World number 341 Oma Jasika qualified well this week to make only his second ever appearance at the Australian Open, losing his first comfortably to David Ferrer in 2017. The 26-year-old will be well-backed as an Aussie underdog in this clash but Hurkacz’s serve and net-play should be too hot to handle. Take the Pole to win in three.

TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN 3-0
