26-year-old Alexander Bublik set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 17th this week after a strong run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open. The Kazakh is far from his best in typical clay-court conditions like Rome and incoming Roland-Garros but Madrid’s high altitude helped his mammoth, maverick serving upset Houston champion Ben Shelton before a competitive exit to third seed Daniil Medvedev and he should not be underestimated here with one of the higher ceilings om tour.
World number 53 Nuno Borges has also enjoyed his best work on hardcourts so far this season but he came back from a set down to oust clay specialist Pedro Martinez 10-8 in their deciding tiebreak on Wednesday, suggesting he has found an affinity with the conditions in Rome.
