THE LOWDOWN
NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number one Novak Djokovic laboured to his first two victories at the Australian Open, both in four sets against Dino Prizmic and Alexei Popyrin, but he has improved with two efficient results over Tomas Martin Etcheverry and a dismantling of Adrian Mannarino. The 36-year-old is looking to extend two of his own records this week as he targets an 11th major title in Melbourne and a 25th Grand Slam overall, which would eclipse the overall Open Era record currently shared with Margaret Court.
TAYLOR FRITZ
World number 12 Taylor Fritz has endured some tough form on tour over the past six months or so but back-to-back major quarter-finals has been encouraging. The 26-year-old played very well to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets on Sunday, serving like a dream to build on some strong results over Fabian Marozsan and Hugo Gaston after his early scare in five sets against Facundo Diaz Acosta. Fritz also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2022, the same year he claimed his most prestigious title at Indian Wells, before just missing out to Rafael Nadal in five sets.
THE PREDICTION
Novak Djokovic quite clearly began his Australian Open title defence ill last week but he has improved physically over the past few rounds. A 6-0 6-0 6-3 victory over a spent Adrian Mannarino on Sunday offered the Serb some much-needed respite, essentially playing a live practice session on Rod Laver Arena, to suggest he will be refreshed ahead of a much tougher scrap here. Taylor Fritz will bring renewed confidence into the last eight after putting some recent poor form behind him but the American trails Djokovic 0-8 in their head-to-head, with Djokovic putting him out in consummate straight sets at this stage of the US Open in September. The pair have shared some closer battles, most notably in five sets here in 2021, but back Djokovic to win outright here with four sets about as likely as three. You could add a tiebreak for value but it would be a considerable risk, with just four played amongst their eight encounters.
