THE LOWDOWN
World number one Novak Djokovic saw his 19-match winning streak snapped by an inspired Jannik Sinner, buoyed on by the home crowd in Turin, on Tuesday night but he will not panic. The 36-year-old has already secured a record eighth year-end number one spot by beating Holger Rune in his opening ATP Finals match and victory here would see him through comfortably on h2h even if Rune manages to stun Sinner. Djokovic is targeting a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title this week, tied as he is currently with Roger Federer.
World number nine Hubert Hurkacz was unfortunate not to have snuck into the ATP Finals top eight proper after bursting into form in the past few months and he was perhaps even more unfortunate to come in as alternate for Stefanos Tsitsipas just now, with the Greek looking unable to compete at this level in his opening defeat to Jannik Sinner. Tsitsipas played just three games against Holger Rune on Tuesday before retiring from the tournament to leave Hurkacz with a dead rubber. World number nine Hurkacz can still take a shot at glory here, though, with a nothing-to-lose crack at claiming a first win against the world number one.
THE PREDICTION
Hubert Hurkacz comes in to probably pose more of a threat to Novak Djokovic’s route to the semi-finals than this current version of Stefanos Tsitsipas but it is still highly unlikely. Djokovic rarely loses two matches on the bounce and this must-win match against a player he leads 6-0 in their head-to-head offers him a tough but attainable challenge. Hurkacz took the Serb to four sets in a serving clinic at Wimbledon in July but Djokovic turned the screw in both of their tiebreaks to prove himself a level above in the key moments. A tiebreak is likely against in-form Hurkacz but the Pole may struggle after coming in cold. Back Djokovic to win outright, probably in straight sets.
BETTING TIP: NOVAK DJOKOVIC TO WIN
