What else is there to say about Novak Djokovic? The 36-year-old won a record-extending seventh Paris Masters title last weekend to further extend his own Masters title record to 40 and he is just three trophies away from a century – six behind old rival Roger Federer and 12 behind overall record-holder Jimmy Connors. The world number one added another three Grand Slams to his total of 25 this season, two more than any other man in history, and he is just one away from Margaret Court’s overall Open Era record chased by Serena Williams for so many years. Djokovic can achieve all these things with room to spare despite his age but the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune are becoming fascinating obstacles to at least challenge the now surely undisputed GOAT.
World number 10 Holger Rune snuck into the ATP Finals line-up last-minute with some quick improvements under new coach Boris Becker, who was with Djokovic 2013-16, taking him above Taylor Fritz and out-running in-form Hubert Hurkacz in the Race to Turin. The 20-year-old stunned Djokovic from a set down in last season’s Paris Masters final to claim his most prestigious of now four ATP titles but he has struggled with fitness and form in the second-half of 2023 to look set for a tough week in Turin.
THE PREDICTION
Novak Djokovic can set yet another record of his own this week if he wins the ATP Finals as he currently ties with Roger Federer at six each. The Serb is starting to quite sensibly limit his time on tour to stay as fit as possible for occasions like these but we may see him deviate from that next year with Jimmy Connors’ 109 ATP titles to beat. Holger Rune will be up for this challenge on his ATP Finals debut and he is yet to be beaten in straight sets by the Serb, with sets going each way in all four of their meetings in a well-contested 2-2 head-to-head. This version of Djokovic looks unassailable this week, though, with concessions made only for a peak performance from Carlos Alcaraz or home favourite Jannik Sinner. Back Djokovic to hit the ground running with an outright win but do consider the three-set addition given their record.
