NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number one Novak Djokovic overcame a late assault by Tomas Martin Etcheverry to claim his first straight-sets result of the campaign on Friday. The 36-year-old is aiming to extend his own Men’s Singles records of 10 Australian Open titles and 24 Grand Slam titles overall this fortnight, with his victory at the ATP Finals late last season seeing him match Roger Federer’s record of six. Djokovic has few things left to surpass in the sport but he will certainly be targeting a last chance at achieving the golden slam in this Olympic season – a feat only managed by Steffi Graf in 1988.
ADRIAN MANNARINO
French number one Adrian Mannarino has already played 15 sets of tennis at the Australian Open but the unorthodox 35-year-old conquered 16th seed Ben Shelton on Friday to vastly impress. Mannarino is through to the round of 16 in Melbourne for the second time and the second week of a slam for the fifth time overall after thrice doing so at Wimbledon in 2013, 2017 and 2018. The Frenchman has probably never been in better form, though, after claiming three of his total five ATP titles in the second-half of last season and he will set a career-high ATP world ranking of around 17th for his efforts so far.
THE PREDICTION
Adrian Mannarino is a tour veteran with plenty of unorthodox weapons that can cause unsuspecting players all sorts of problems on tour, particularly at ATP 250 level, but this will almost certainly be a step too far. World number one Novak Djokovic was visibly ill during his opening two matches in Melbourne, four-set victories over spirited young players, but his straight-sets result over Tomas Martin Etcheverry was a more composed performance that suggests he is back in pole position to win an 11th title here this fortnight. Mannarino is a perennial underdog who is playing well enough to snatch a set here, perhaps even two, but the Frenchman trails 0-4 in their head-to-head to suggest Djokovic can be backed to romp home in straight sets.
