THE LOWDOWN

NICK KYRGIOS

Nick Kyrgios will feature in his first Grand Slam semi-final after seeing off a dogged Cristian Garin on Wednesday and, since his fractious win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, the volatile Aussie has been a more focused animal and looks a highly dangerous player right now.

RAFAEL NADAL

Rafael Nadal’s injury problems reared their head in his quarter-final clash with Taylor Fritz but, as he so often does, the Spaniard dug deep into his considerable reserves to clinch the match in a deciding set, but the toll this will have taken on his abdominal issue does leave some doubts about his ability to continue in the competition.

THE PREDICTION

Where to start with this one? There is concern that this match will not even go ahead given that Rafa Nadal is clearly plagued by an abdominal injury at present. That he was even able to finish his match against Fritz in the quarters, let alone win it in the fifth, is a testament to his warrior-like abilities, but there has to be some concern over his ability to recover in time to face a red-hot Nick Kyrgios. The pair have a frosty relationship to say the least, which adds another dimension to this semi-final, and Kyrgios knows that this year could well be his best chance to clinch a Grand Slam title. He has served superbly throughout the tournament and if Rafa is even a little restricted when it comes to movement then the Aussie looks more than capable of winning this. A fit-and-firing Nadal is a different story but with the doubts hanging over his physical condition, the temptation is to back Kyrgios here, even if the match does take place.
