THE PREDICTION

This is a really intriguing first tour-level meeting between World number 63 Nadia Podoroska and number 99 tamara Zidansek, both of whom enjoyed the best runs of their career at Roland-Garros in subsequent seasons. Both 26 years old, Podoroska was the first to enjoy an incredible run to the semi-finals in Paris in 2020 before she lost out to then little-known rising star Iga Swiatek, and Zidansek enjoyed the same trajectory in 2021 before defeat to eventual runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Zidansek set a career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd early in 2022 after claiming her maiden WTA title at the Lausanne Ladies Open but she has struggled to match that intensity practically ever since – with Podoroska’s depreciation coming via an unfortunate season-long absence through injury.

Neither player brings much recent form into the first round in Melbourne but Podoroska did impress at the Ningbo Open late last season, making the semi-finals before a three-set defeat to eventual champion Ons Jabeur. Back the higher-ranked Argentine to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.

TIP: NADIA PODOROSKA TO WIN A SET
