MIRRA ANDREEVA
16-year-old sensation Mirra Andreeva came back from a set and then 5-1 down in the third to stun Diane Parry on Friday, earning her passage through to the round of 16 of the Australian Open on her debut. The Russian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 32nd for her efforts so far but she will be hungry for more after only just missing out on reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, also on her debut, last summer. Andreeva finished runner-up to fellow Russian Alina Korneeva in the Girls’ Singles here last season and she is still four months away from completing a year on the main tour after bursting onto the scene at the Madrid Masters.
BARBORA KREJCIKOVA
Former world number two Barbora Krejcikova came back from a set down to outlast Aussie hopeful Storm Hunter on Friday, her second fight back from a set down this week. The world number 11 has struggled to stay fit enough to put in consistent performances over the last few years but at her best she won the double at Roland-Garros in 2021 and she claimed a maiden Masters title in Dubai last February. Krejcikova is through to the second week at the Australian Open for a third-successive time, with a quarter-final exit here two years ago her best showing yet.
THE PREDICTION
Mirra Andreeva has never lost in the first round of a Grand Slam, remarkable enough at 16, but she showed elite mental strength on Friday to make the round of 16 on a major debut for the second time. The Russian beat Barbora Krejcikova, via a second-set retirement, en-route to her first last 16 exit at Wimbledon last summer but she proved that result no fluke with a straight-sets victory over the Czech at the Beijing Masters last October, also stunning former number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova before a three-set exit to Elena Rybakina. Andreeva’s rising star shows no sign of slowing but Krejcikova will be desperate not to lose again and she possesses the sort of game capable of playing the pantomime villain of this piece, with Melbourne set to back her teenage opponent as one of their own. Andreeva came perilously close to beating Madison Keys to make the last eight at Wimbledon but she can be backed to do this this time around. Take the Russian to win outright, although straight sets should probably do it.
