World number 51 Marcos Giron is a solid all-court threat who has enjoyed some of the best tennis of his career since late last season. The 30-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Tokyo 500 before a three-set exit to eventual champion Ben Shelton in October and he finished runner-up to Tommy Paul at the Dallas Open in February. A run to the quarter-finals of the clay-court Houston Open earlier this month bodes well for his chances against Max Purcell, whom Giron beat in straight sets in Dallas en-route to the final. World number 80 Purcell enjoyed a real purple patch on the late hardcourt swing last season but he is far from his best on clay despite claiming the Houston Men’s Doubles title last time out alongside Jordan Thompson.
