Ann Li picked up another victory over Belinda Bencic as the American advanced to the next stage at the China Open. Li defeated Bencic at the US Open last year, and she repeated the feat in Beijing with a 6-4 6-3 win. The 26-year-old was broken only once and converted all three of her own break point opportunities, completing the win after one hour and 18 minutes. Li also got past Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets.

She will now face world number Elina Svitolina after the Ukrainian beat Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Svitolina saved all five break point opportunities and broke at the end of both sets to win 6-4 7-5. She now has 47 victories this season.

Svitolina leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a comfortable win over Li at Roland Garros, but that was five years ago. Li is far more established and much more competitive on hard courts, so this should be a considerably closer contest.
