Roque Conceicao Moreira Jr.: Can the Brazilian make good on his second chance at Contender Series glory?
Things didn't pan out according to plan for Roque Conceicao Moreira Jr (11-3) in his last appearance on the Contender Series, with the Brazilian getting nuked by a nasty first round uppercut from Imanol Rodriguez, marking his first and only stoppage loss to date. However, he's since rebounded with a first round KO of his own to earn himself a second crack at the UFC. A prolific finishing threat with just a single victory by decision, Conceicao is a heavy-handed striker with respectable grappling, combining big power on the feet with solid takedown defence.
Alexander Chavez: "Penchia" looks to maintain his undefeated record and punch his ticket to the big leagues
Undefeated Peruvian prospect, Alexander Chavez (9-0) debuts on the Contender Series as the second prospect out of Inka FC in as many weeks this season, having fought the entirety of his career in the Peruvian promotion. Turning pro after an undefeated amateur career where he went 5-0, the 26 year old is primarily a striker, fighting with a high-output Muay Thai style to put the beats on his opponents to the tune of six KO wins. He can fight out of either stance and works the body extremely well to complement dangerous knees and leg kicks.
Roque Conceicao Moreira Jr. vs Alexander Chavez prediction
Conceicao had a rough go of things in his first Contender Series showing, but with hindsight, coming up short to Imanol Rodriguez is not a bad loss. Case in point, "Himan" is 2-0 in the UFC and just dispatched the highly regarded Alden Coria in less than a round last weekend.
However, Chavez looks like a solid prospect, and has a similar striking resume of his fellow Inka FC import, former Muay Thai world champion, Ian Escuza, as a two time IFMA Muay Thai champion. I'd argue that the Conceicao has had the stiffer run of competition throughout his career to date, but "Penchia" has had some sneakily impressive wins of his own.
Throw in the size advantage for Chavez, and I'm leaning towards the Peruvian here. While I'd give the edge in power to the Brazilian, Chavez fights with some serious pressure, something that Conceicao really struggled with against Rodriguez. I can see him surviving an early onslaught from Conceicao to begin teeing off as he settles into his flow.
This is probably going to be an absolute barnburner; I wouldn't be surprised to see this one reach the scorecards. In any case, the tentative pick is Chavez to get his hand raised.
Prediction: Alexander Chavez to win
