THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Casper Ruud enjoyed an expectedly one-sided straight-sets victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Tuesday, displaying a fiercer forehand than usual as he aims to improv his results away from his favoured clay. The 25-year-old impressed with three straight-set victories at the United Cup two weeks ago, single-handedly dragging Norway into a shock quarter-final, and he looks well capable of at least emulating his best round of 16 exit here three years ago. World number 45 Max Purcell overcame some early nerves to claim his first ever victory at the Australian Open, to the delight of home fans. The Aussie, also 25, came back from a set down to beat qualifier Mate Valkusz in four sets on Tuesday and he should be better for it in this intriguing clash with Ruud, whom he upset en-route to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters last August.

The Melbourne crowd will give Purcell everything they have on Margaret Court Arena but Ruud looks dialled in and ready to prove some doubters wrong this fortnight. Back the Norwegian to win outright, probably in four.

TIP: CASPER RUUD TO WIN
