25-year-old Mate Valkusz claimed the first tour-level win of his career with a huge upset over Daniel Altmaier on Tuesday after scarping through to the main draw as a lucky loser. The Hungarian will enjoy some backing as the underdog in this first match on Wednesday in Metz but it is a shame he is not enjoying this run on home soil at the Sofia Open. 22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko looks too steep a challenge in this first encounter as he brought a career-high ATP world ranking of 63rd into Metz before a solid opener over Mathias Bourgue on Monday. The Russian has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season and he should be considered a very dark horse for the title here after beating Taylor Fritz and Stan Wawrinka at the Swiss Indoors two weeks ago. Backing Shevchenko to come through outright is the sensible call, though, with caution always wise in matches involving lucky losers.
