THE LOWDOWN
MARTA KOSTYUK
21-year-old Marta Kostyuk will break inside the top 30 on tour for the first time after a fabulous run to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, conceding just three games to breakout star Maria Timofeeva. The Ukrainian first burst onto the scene as a clear future star at 15 years old here in Melbourne, making the third round for the first of now four times in conditions that clearly suit her athletic game but she only claimed her first WTA title last spring at the Austin Open.
COCO GAUFF
World number four Coco Gauff is through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time after a consummate victory over Magdalena Frech. The 19-year-old came back from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka to the US Open title last September, fulfilling her destiny as a teenage sensation, but she reached her first major final at 18 before defeat to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in 2022. Gauff first burst onto the scene with a remarkable run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old in 2019, like Kostyuk a year earlier here, and her first round exit there last summer was the catalyst for her ruthless form since.
THE PREDICTION
Coco Gauff beat Marta Kostyuk in three tight sets in Adelaide this time last season in their only previous encounter and whilst both players have improved since this looks the American’s match to lose. Gauff took a cardio session after her 6-1 6-2 victory over Magdalena Frech on Sunday to depict how easy the level was for her and she has conceded fewer than four games in three of her four matches so far, with a tighter clash with Caroline Dolehide a champion’s scrappy win. Marta Kostyuk will probably receive the majority of the support in this clash of young stars, not least due to her admirable outspokenness on tour as a Ukrainian, but also because she has been threatening a run like this in Melbourne for years. Gauff should be too good to lose this match but three sets would not be a surprise. Back the American to win outright.
TIP: COCO GAUFF TO WIN
