THE PREDICTION
World number 41 Marta Kostyuk tends to enjoy her tennis here at the Australian Open, with back-to-back third round exits here in each of the last two seasons. The 22-year-old went on to win her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open in March to build on early season form but she will be disappointed with a lack of progression after that, with more to follow for the talented youngster this season. Kostyuk has started well so far this month, with exits to Daria Kasatkina in Brisbane and Jelena Ostapenko in Adelaide putting her working level somewhere inside the top 40, and she looks well capable of rolling through to the second round here.
World number 104 Claire Liu has lost both of her first two matches this season, albeit to eventual finalists Coco Gauff and Kasatkina in Auckland and Adelaide, respectively. The 23-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but it has been some time since her last burst of form when she made the semi-finals of the Hungarian Open in July. Back Kostyuk to win in straight sets.
