World number 38 Marketa Vondrousova found herself in the unfamiliar position of having to qualify for the Dubai Tennis Championships but after a spot of fortune against the injured Danielle Collins in the first round she conceded just two games to Varvara Gracheva on Wednesday. The 22-year-old won a Silver Medal at last season’s Tokyo Olympic Games but she has yet to add to her Biel Open title as a teenager from 2017. Her run to the Roland-Garros final a year later remains her stand-out achievement. World number 146 Dayana Yastremska provided one of many shocks in Dubai this week with a straight-sets victory over second seed Barbora Krejcikova. The former world number 21 is well capable of this kind of level but she has struggled to come back from her ban that saw her miss half of last season for a charge and subsequent clearing of doping.
Yastremska was the winner of their only tour-level meeting back in 2018 at the Budapest Open but at this moment in time Vondrousova is certainly the more backable, more predictable player. Yastremska is always a dangerous anomaly with a sudden, brilliant performance never far away but as she continues to struggle with consistency match-to-match take the Czech to win at least a set here.
