THE PREDICTION

World number two overcame close friend Paula Badosa in three sets in an entertaining match on Thursday, with the Spaniard forced to retire injured late on. 25-year-old Sabalenka looks ready to put the tragic loss of her former partner last month behind her here in Stuttgart, where she has finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in back-to-back seasons, but she is far from explosive best on clay and currently hard to pin down form-wise given her lack of matches since defending the Australian Open in January.

World number eight Marketa Vondrousova may have shocked the tennis world last summer when she won Wimbledon with a peerless run but the Czech was a Grand Slam finalist at Roland-Garros first, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty in 2019, to prove her credentials on this surface. Straight-set wins over Donna Vekic and Anastasia Potapova so far this week suggest she is ready to return to form following several months of injury struggles but Sabalenka is a significantly tougher test. The pair have never met on clay but Sabalenka has won each of their last four matches to lead their tour-level head-to-head 4-1. Back the Belarussian to edge through outright, with three sets likelier than two.

TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN
