THE PREDICTION
World number nine Maria Sakkari finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells for the second time in three seasons last week but she will ultimately be pleased with a strong campaign. The 28-year-old looks to have found a new resolve under new coach David Witt, who formerly worked with Venus Williams and more recently Jessica Pegula, but this first match from disappointment will be a very significant test against up-and-coming Yue Yuan.
25-year-old Yuan romped to victory at the Austin Open earlier this month, claiming her maiden WTA title, and she made it nine wins on the spin before a quarter-final exit to Coco Gauff at Indian Wells last week. Wins over Daria Kasatkina and Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng in the desert suggest Yuan, who brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 37th into Miami, can produce something special here and she looked strong in a consummate opener over Anna Blinkova on Tuesday. Sakkari is no stranger to a three-set comeback, so consider taking Yuan to earn at least a set despite playing the underdog in this potential thriller.
