THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Emma Navarro has been enjoying a remarkable surge up the rankings since bursting into form last summer but her three-set victory over world number two Aryna Sabalenka yesterday puts her on the world stage for the first time. The American could break inside the top 20 on tour for the first time even if she loses here but she will back herself to take even more at Indian Wells as she continues to curry favour with a rather shell-shocked home support.

World number nine Maria Sakkari finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here two years ago but she has struggled to match that intensity, at least consistently enough to go significantly deep at prestigious events, practically ever since. A change of coaching staff, now under Jessica Pegula’s ex-coach David Witt, looks to have recalibrated the Greek’s powerful but often fragile game so far this campaign but it will be some time still until she can be confidently backed to match her results to her potential. Navarro stunned Sakkari in straight sets en-route to the semi-finals of the San Diego Open last September but the Greek returned the favour last month in Dubai, albeit in three sets. Back Navarro to win at least a set then, as she has in each of their two matches, to leave the victor of a likely thriller up to chance.
