THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Maria Sakkari is the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy’s top seed here and playing like it so far with two assured straight-set wins over Anastasia Potapova and Ekaterina Alexandrova. The world number seven has just one WTA title to her name from the 2019 Rabat Open but she should be able to add more this season after a best year yet in 2021 saw her reach the semi-finals of two Grand Slams at Roland-Garros and the US Open. World number 26 Elise Mertens enjoyed a strong display at the Australian Open last month before losing to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins and she has started this tournament with two strong displays against in-form Alize Cornet and Petra Martic, both in three sets.
Their head-to-head record is leans slightly in Mertens’ favour 4-3 but Sakkari beat the Belgian in three sets at Roland-Garros last season in their first meeting since 2019 and she looks to have the edge in this quarter-final. Take the Greek to win outright, or to take at least a set inside an accumulator.
