THE PREDICTION
Both world number 67 Marcos Giron and number 15 Tommy Paul upset the odds on Saturday by beating in-form Adrian Mannarino and Ben Shelton, respectively. Whilst Dallas fans may be disappointed not to see a rematch between Mannarino and Shelton after their epic five-setter at the Australian open last month this match could well end up a thriller in its own right between two tireless grafters on court who have both yet to drop a set. 30-year-old Giron will be the more desperate of the two in this encounter as he targets a maiden ATP title at the second attempt, having lost his first to Brandon Nakashima in 2022, but this is only Paul’s fourth final on tour and he is seeking to snap a losing streak of two after defeats in Acapulco and Eastbourne last season.
The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Paul claimed their most recent clash in Toronto last summer but Giron has been in fine form over the last few months to suggest an upset is on the cards. The suitably cautious call is backing Paul to win at least a set as the likelier champion but Giron’s results this week provide some real momentum that could just tip the balance.
