THE PREDICTION
World number 50 Dominik Koepfer and number 51 Marcos Giron meet for what looks set to be a very tight contest on paper. The pair have never met at tour-level but a 2-2 head-to-head overall further suggests that this is one of the tougher matches to call of the day, although Giron has won each of their last two matches to bring some momentum into the clash. 30-year-old Giron recently finished runner-up to Tommy Paul at the Dallas Open, before an excellent to the semi-finals in Delray Beach, but a straight-sets exit in the first round of Indian Wells could have been avoided against the intermittent Thanasi Kokkinakis. 29-year-old Koepfer also brings a two-match losing streak into Miami but a run to the quarter-finals before that was ended in tight tiebreaks by Holger Rune as he continues to enjoy some resurgent form. Both players have enjoyed strong seasons so far but back Giron to earn at least a set as the home player here, leaving what looks likely to be a three-set slog up to chance.
