World number eight Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals late last season but he looks set to miss the cut by some distance after an erratic 2023. The 24-year-old beat Yosuke Watanuki in straight sets on Tuesday, a solid-enough result against a home hopeful, but a three-set exit to Fabian Marozsan in Shanghai last week was the latest in a series of shock exits at tournaments since he finished runner-up at Roland-Garros – again to Novak Djokovic. World number 79 Marcos Giron beat Japanese number one Yoshihito Nishioka in three tight sets on Monday, including a first set 16-14 tiebreak, to back up a strong qualifying campaign. The 30-year-old has enjoyed some strong form since the start of the Asian swing but there is a ceiling, with regards to recent defeats by Jannik Sinner and Dominic Thiem, that should see a sub-par Ruud scrape through. The Norwegian is a hard man to back with confidence right now so consider a one-off on Giron to snatch at least a set or leave this one alone altogether.
