26-year-old Magdalena Frech will set a new career-high WTA world ranking inside the top 50 for the first time no matter the outcome here after an excellent upset over Ekaterina Alexandrova on Sunday. The Pole qualified the hard way this weekend, just as she did last week in Doha before losing in tight three sets to Victoria Azarenka, but her improved ranking will earn her more main draw spots in the future if she can maintain this level. A career-best run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open last month saw another top 20 upset over Caroline Garcia but former number 14 Petra Martic is still capable of that sort of quality despite her current deflated rank of 64th. The 31-year-old beat Caroline Dolehide in straight sets on Monday to open her account in Dubai well and she was competitive in defeat to Naomi Osaka at this stage last week in Doha. Back in-form Frech to earn at least a set form this first encounter with Martic but this tough match is best left out of an accumulator.
