26-year-old Magdalena Frech could break inside he top 50 on tour for the first time after coming back from a set down to oust qualifier Anastasia Zakharova in the most important match of her life. The Pole is through to the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time, having reached the third round once before at Wimbledon in 2022, as she continues the form that saw her blossom on the grass swing last summer.

World number three Coco Gauff conceded just two games to fellow American Alycia Parks on Friday, putting in her most convincing of three straight-set victories so far in Melbourne. The teenager burst into the form of her career so far last summer to win her first WTA 500 title in Washington, then her first Masters in Cincinnati, and then to match her idol, Serena Williams, by winning her maiden Grand Slam title as a 19-year-old at the US Open. Gauff defended a title for the first time with victory at the Auckland Classic last weekend, seeing her ride an eight-match winning streak into he round of 16 of the Australian Open for a third time.
THE PREDICTION
Magdalena Frech is a renowned scrapper on tour who is no stranger to a three-set battle but this looks a step too far despite her run so far. World number three Coco Gauff has improved round-by-round in Melbourne but she rarely found her explosive best en-route to the US Open title last September, often winning ugly like serial champions do, to suggest there is more to come from the American. Gauff is yet to drop a set in Melbourne and she can be backed to maintain that streak en-route to her first quarter-final here.
