THE PREDICTION
This is an incredible opportunity for both 26-year-old Magdalena Frech and 22-year-old Anastasia Zakharova to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time, with Zakharova already in uncharted waters on her Grand Slam debut. The Russian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 132nd after coming through qualifying well before an excellent comeback over Yulia Putintseva and a dismissal of Kaja Juvan in the second round. Frech, however, will also set a career-high of her own after claiming perhaps the biggest win of her career, moving inside the top 60 for the first time after a remarkable straight-sets dismantling of 16th-seed Caroline Garcia. Frech found the form of her career last summer on grass but she has displayed a solid resolve across surfaces ever since to look the more capable of edging through this first encounter. Given the strains both players are under here, though, back the Pole to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
