World number 20 Madison Keys overcame fellow American Hailey Baptiste in three tight sets on Friday to claim a string result in her first match of 2024. World number 79 Yulia Putintseva grabbed a huge upset over in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday to build on her solid opener over Tamara Korpatsch and the Kazakh is always capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests. Two of the more unpredictable players meet here for a fixture that should be kept far from any promising accumulators and whilst Keys will enjoy the backing of a partisan atmosphere in California it is difficult to be confident about her overall fitness.
