World number 49 Lucia Bronzetti enjoyed a strong run to the third round of Indian Wells last week, losing in straight sets to Coco Gauff after ousting Magdalena Frech and Anhelina Kalinina, and she looks the just-about likelier to come through this first encounter. World number 72 Taylor Townsend will be the popular draw as a home hopeful with an entertaining game in these conditions but despite qualifying well this weekend she has struggled to make a significant dent on tour for some time. The 27-year-old is well capable of better tennis than her ranking suggests, and a three-set exit to Anna Kalinskaya at Indian Wells suggests that, but Bronzetti is the slightly more dependable of two of the streakier players on tour. Back the Italian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, with three of Townsend’s last four matches seeing a decider.
