THE LOWDOWN

LINDA NOSKOVA

19-year-old Linda Noskova came back from a set down to stun world number one Iga Swiatek on Saturday, ousting the top seed with some remarkably composed, big-game tennis. The Czech is the eldest of this current crop of rising stars from her tennis-obsessed nation and she will set a career-high WTA world ranking of 35th for her efforts here. Noskova had never reached the third round at a Grand Slam before this memorable Australian Open debut but she has a great record in Australia so far, reaching the Adelaide final last season and the semi-finals in Brisbane two weeks ago.

ELINA SVITOLINA

Former world number three Elina Svitolina made short work of Viktorija Golubic on Saturday to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open without dropping a set. The current world number 23 came back from maternity leave with a vengeance last summer, winning her 17th WTA title at the Strasbourg Open before incredible runs to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and the semi-finals at the US Open. Svitolina made back-to-back quarter-finals here in 2018 and 2019 but she has reached three semi-finals at this level, twice in Wimbledon and once at the US Open in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

Linda Noskova has been steadily rising up the rankings for some time now whilst going under the radar, perhaps as the eldest of a seemingly never-ending production line of teenage Czech stars. Her victory over Iga Swiatek on Saturday was no fluke after her excellent upset of compatriot Marie Bouzkova in the first round and she has nothing to lose in this biggest match of her young life against a clearly desperate Elina Svitolina. A first meeting between the two should end up a thriller if Noskova can repeat her level and it will be interesting to see how Svitolina copes if she drops her first set of this campaign. Back the Ukrainian to win outright all the same but leave this tough call out of an accumulator.

TIP: ELINA SVITOLINA TO WIN
