THE LOWDOWN
LINDA NOSKOVA
19-year-old Linda Noskova will break inside the top 30 on tour for the first time after reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. The Czech rode her luck when Elina Svitolina was forced to retire injured just three games into their round of 16 match but she has thoroughly earned her place here already after upsetting world number one Iga Swiatek from a set down in the third round.
DAYANA YASTREMSKA
23-year-old Dayana Yastremska set a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st in early 2020 after making the round of 16 at Wimbledon the summer before but she has eclipsed that achievement with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals here as a qualifier, stunning two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka in straight sets on Monday. Yastremska will move back up as high as world number 43 for her efforts so far, with her first peak on tour seeing three WTA titles claimed in Hong Kong, Hua Hin and Strasbourg.
THE PREDICTION
World number 93 Dayana Yastremska is one of two Ukrainians into the last eight at the Australian Open for the first time, with Marta Kostyuk set to face Coco Gauff on Tuesday, and the pair have ousted three Russians or Belarussians between them in Victoria Azarenka, Elina Avanesyan and Maria Timofeeva to provide some much-needed joy for their war-torn nation. Whilst it is hard to quantify the extra motivation, and indeed extra pressure, that facing players from those nations may have given the pair it is something to consider as they each face very different challenges in the quarter-finals. Yastremska has always possessed the ability to return to this level on tour but her plight outside of the top 100 has been concerning for some time.
It is hard to say how Linda Noskova will be supported in this first meeting with the Ukrainian, with her victory over Iga Swiatek winning some neutral fans that may turn the other way in sympathy for Ukraine, but she has the more dependable game for a high-pressure clash like this. That being said, Yastremska’s results over in-form Emma Navarro and two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka make her a serious threat and it is hard to confidently decide if playing just three games on Monday will help or hinder Noskova. Back Yastremska to win at least a set on the momentum of a huge win, with Noskova’s own top result a few days ago now, to leave this result totally up to chance.
