THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th after an incredible run to the semi-finals at Roland-Garros was ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The Brazilian struggled with the effects of a freak injury at Wimbledon for several months after but she rediscovered her battling best late on to win the WTA Elite Trophy in style, beating four top 20 players in a row without dropping a set. World number 85 Linda Fruhvirtova reached the round of 16 here last season to prove herself a serious up-and-comer on tour at 17, now 18, years old. The Czech’s form tailed off quite heavily afterwards but she should not be underestimated here in Melbourne given her dream debut last year, especially as Haddad-Maia lost her only match this year in straight sets. Back Haddad-Maia to win outright for caution’s sake.

TIP: BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA TO WIN
