THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova endured a concerningly poor start to her 2024 but she burst back into form at the Abu Dhabi Open last week, ousting Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-finals before a three-set defeat to eventual champion Elena Rybakina. The Russian had won each of her first four matches against Rybakina to produce one of the odder head-to-heads on tour but it will be fascinating to see how she bounces back from that defeat both here and when she next meets the Kazakh. World number 38 Leylah Fernandez ended 2024 in style with a third WTA title won at the Hong Kong Open before almost single-handedly dragging Canada through to their inaugural Billie Jean King Cup title. The 21-year-old has built back her fitness after a tough few seasons struggling with injuries but she desperately needs some consistency now as a player with clear top 20 potential, if not more. If Samsonova plays like she did last week the Russian should come through this potential thriller but the suitably cautious pick is backing her to earn at least a set to avoid the result.
