THE PREDICTION

World number 55 Magda Linette brings a three-match losing streak into the Miami Open with a spark of hope about this fortnight after she enjoyed one of her better runs of a largely disappointing 2023 here, upsetting Victoria Azarenka in three sets to reach the round of 16. The Pole ended 2022 in serious form that took her all the way to the semi-finals of the Australian Open but she seemed to struggle under the weight of expectation that followed, leaving this season something of a rebuild. World number 40 Lesia Tsurenko will be eagerly awaiting a return to the natural surfaces of clay and grass, on which she has enjoyed some excellent results over the past few seasons, but she too brings sub-par form into Miami despite a decent third round exit at the Australian Open. The 34-year-old beat Linette in three sets at the Eastbourne International two years ago in their only previous tour-level encounter so back Tsurenko to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
