Former world number 19 Karolina Muchova is the last player to beat Ash Barty at the Australian Open after she stunned the, now retired, current champion in the quarter-finals here back in 2021. The powerful Czech has also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on two occasions, most recently later that year, but her promising career has been plagued by injuries that saw her miss much of 2022. Muchova stunned Maria Sakkari in straight sets at Roland-Garros last summer in only her eighth match back from her latest big absence from tour and a run to the quarter-finals in Auckland this week was fairly encouraging despite her exit to world number 130 Rebeka Masarova. 33-year-old Lesia Tsurenko qualified without dropping a set this week and the Ukrainian is another former top 30 player who can be much better than her current ranking of 134 suggests. In fact, world number 133 Muchova faces number 134 Tsurenko here in a match that makes a mockery of the WTA world rankings and this first meeting between the two could be an epic. Back Muchova to win outright here considering her Australian Open pedigree but leaving this match out of an accumulator is wise.
