THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Viktoriya Tomova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 70th after a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Hobart International this week, losing in three sets to eventual champion Emma Navarro. The 28-year-old has a rather odd Grand Slam record, failing to win any of her three matches here in Melbourne, three in New York or either of her Paris appearances, whilst reaching the second round at Wimbledon on all three occasions, to suggest this is a wide open fixture against Kayla Day, who returns to Melbourne for the first time since 2017. The 24-year-old brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 86th into the Australian Open after some strong work on the ITF circuit last year complemented her shock run ton the third round at Roland-Garros. Tomova beat Day in Hobart qualifying last weekend to look the favourite on form here but backing the Bulgarian to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid picking a result.
