World number 54 Katie Boulter kicked off 2024 with an incredible career-best victory over world number five Jessica Pegula at the United Cup, taking Great Britain’s only point against the defending champions. The 27-year-old enjoyed the best season of her career last year, picking up her maiden title at the Nottingham Open in June before making back-to-back third rounds at Wimbledon and the US Open. The Brit has reached at leas the third round in each of her last three major appearances but she is looking for a first victory in Melbourne since a second round exit here in 2019 and this is a really tough opener against in-form Yue Yuan. The 25-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 61st this week after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Hobart International last week, losing to eventual champion Emma Navarro, and her three results over Sloane Stephens, Xinyu Wang and Yulia Putintseva suggest she is the slight favourite on form. Back Yuan to win at least a set from a match likely to see three.
