THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating clash of styles between brick wall baseliner Karen Khachanov and tricky left-hander Yoshihito Nishioka on Tuesday, with the crowd likely to play their part in a big pull towards the Asian player in Zhuhai. World number 46 Nishioka set a career-high of 24th earlier this season built on the form of his career this time last summer and victory at the Korea Open is proof of what he can do, and what more he could achieve, on a first proper Asian swing since the pandemic. This is a huge match for both players but perhaps even more for world number 15 Khachanov, who has failed to win a title since his most prestigious of four came at Novak Djokovic’s expense at the Paris Masters in 2018. The Russian finished runner-up to Gael Monfils in his most recent final early last season but he looks capable of breaking that drought now with a 3-1 lead over Nishioka in their head-to-head.
This should be tight, though, with Nishioka getting the better of Khachanov around this time last season in Washington before the Russian coasted to victory in the round of 16 at the Australian Open this January. Both earned their place in this final with huge wins in the semis, Khachanov beating Sebastian Korda in straight sets and Nishioka ousting in-form Aslan Karatsev in similar fashion, to suggest the most sensible pick is taking Khachanov to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
