THE PREDICTION
This should be an interesting clash between Russian pair world number four Daniil Medvedev and number 17 Karen Khachanov as they face-off on clay for the first time. 28-year-old Medvedev leads their head-to-head 5-1 on hardcourts, very much his favoured surface, but the playing field should be levelled significantly on clay as Khachanov is an effective all-courter who will know he is the more comfortable in these conditions. Two of their three matches last season saw sets go both ways, most recently in the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open in October, and only two of their six meetings overall have finished in straight sets.
Medvedev looked solid against Gael Monfils on Wednesday but he faces a tougher foe on clay here, with Khachanov impressing in his comeback over Francisco Cerundolo. The suitably sensible call is backing Medvedev to earn at least a set – as he has in all six of their encounters – but the elder Russian should be able to find a way through.
TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN A SET
