World number two Carlos Alcaraz was part of a hugely entertaining scrap with Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday, dropping the second set of a four-set victory. The 20-year-old won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022 but he blew that achievement out of the water with an era-defining five-set victory over Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, out-fighting and out-thinking the four-time defending champion. Alcaraz missed last season’s Australian Open through injury to see this run match his only previous appearance here in 2022 but he is still far from his searing best, remaining a dark horse for the title behind the likes of Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner.
18-year-old Jerry Shang will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 139th after coming back from a set down to oust fellow surprise second-rounder Sumit Nagal. The Chinese up-and-comer impressed with a semi-final exit in Hong Kong two weeks ago, where he stunned Frances Tiafoe in straight sets before taking one in defeat to top seed Andrey Rublev, and he is well capable of snatching a set from a currently fragile second seed.
