THE PREDICTION
World number five Jessica Pegula handed Jule Niemeier a first-set bagel in an assured straight-sets win on Thursday. The 30-year-old is playing her first tournament since a shock second round exit to Clara Burel at the Australian Open, with a poor start to 2024 overall seeing her decide to split with long-term coach David Witt. World number 51 Anna Blinkova beat Dayan Yastremska in straight sets on Thursday to back-up an excellent comeback over Caroline Wozniacki. The Russian’s remarkable upset over Elena Rybakina in Melbourne came in the same round as Pegula’s surprise exit, contributing to the mass exodus of seeds, but she failed to capitalise on it with a third round exit to Jasmine Paolini. Pegula handily beat Blinkova this time last season at the Charleston Open but she needed to come back from a set down to oust the Russian in their second encounter at the Beijing Masters in October. Given her break, and Blinkova’s recent results, backing Pegula to win outright looks to be the sensible move.
TIP: JESSICA PEGULA TO WIN
