THE LOWDOWN

Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka are two of the seven remaining Grand Slam champions left in the draw at the Australian Open, with this an incredible opportunity for some renewed glory. 34-year-old Azarenka won both of her major titles here back-to-back in 2012 and 2013 but she has always been a factor on major hardcourts, reaching the US Open final back in 2020 and making the semi-finals here last season before defeat to Elena Rybakina. Former number five Ostapenko burst onto the scene in 2017 with a searing run to the Roland-Garros title and she reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon a year later. Quarter-final exits both here and in New York last season suggest she is well capable at a deep run here and with so many seeds crashing out of the draw she looks a serious dark horse as one of the few players with a proven winning record over world number one Iga Swiatek.

THE PREDICTION

Azarenka beat Ostapenko in three tight sets in the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International two weeks ago to take a 3-0 lead in their head-to0head but Ostapenko went on to win the Adelaide title to bring a seven-match winning streak into this likely thriller. The Latvian has earned at least a set from each of their last two meetings and Azarenka has dropped sets in both of her matches so far in Melbourne. Back Ostapenko to win at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
