THE PREDICTION

World number 84 Thiago Monteiro came back from a set down to beat Marco Cecchinato on Wednesday to back-up an excellent opener over Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The Brazilian beat Dominic Thiem at the Rio Open last week for a big career day and he looks the slightest of favourites in this fourth encounter with Jaume Munar as the player with better recent form. World number 66 Munar will have plenty to say about that after upsetting Chile Open top seed Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets on Wednesday but Musetti has been struggling everywhere he goes in recent weeks. A three-set victory over Alejandro Tabilo on Monday is a more useful result to factor in here, as is Munar’s 2-1 lead over Monteiro in their head-to-head record after most recently beating the Brazilian at Wimbledon last summer. The pair are 1-1 on clay but Monteiro took their South American bout in 2020, with the Spaniard avenging it at the Barcelona Open a year later. Back Monteiro, with the majority of the Santiago crowd behind him, to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier winner.
