World number four Jannik Sinner is quietly going about his business as a serious dark horse for the Australian Open final this fortnight, reaching the third round without dropping a set. The 22-year-old burst into the form of his career late-on last season, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon with some potent if uninspiring tennis before motoring through the hardcourt swing: winning a maiden Masters title in Toronto before picking up two 500 titles in Beijing and Vienna. The Italian then set out his stall as a clear future number one with three remarkable victories over Novak Djokovic in the space of two weeks, beating the Serb in the group stages of the ATP Finals and again in singles and doubles at the Davis Cup Finals to lead Italy to a maiden title there.
THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Sebastian Baez started 2024 in poor form but the gutsy Argentine has battled hard to beat J.J. Wolf and Daniel Elahi Galan in four sets apiece. The 23-year-old is certainly underrated on tour right now, having already won as many ATP titles (four) as his compatriot Diego Schwartzman, but this is a serious step up in opponent. Jannik Sinner won all four matches at the ATP Finals until defeat to Djokovic in the final but he proved an ability to learn and grow with victory in the key moments at the Davis Cup. The Italian should be considered a genuine outsider for the Australian Open title this fortnight but this could be his first real test. Back Sinner to win in straight sets on its own or outright inside an accumulator.
